August: A Purple Pause in the Chaos

I was thinking today as I was quietly watering my garden, about owning plants and the fact that it is such a huge responsibility. They’re not quite pets, but they do rely on you for survival. You are their sun, rain, wind and miracle-grow provider. Without you, they’re just slowly dying. And I am incapable of allowing a plant to pass away! I will resuscitate it to the last and only give up when resurrection seems impossible. I am a nurturer.
I realised though, that with this responsibility comes a huge reward. There’s something incredibly satisfying about nurturing something and watching it grow. One day there’s a new leaf. Then a flower. Then an entire jungle appears and suddenly you’ve created life.
They’re living things that teach me patience. They force me to pay attention to subtle changes, to respond gently, and to understand that not all problems have quick fixes. And then they repay me with beauty, calm, and cleaner air – plus bragging rights when my orchid re-blooms or my spider plant has a baby. And they’re much easier to look after than an actual baby! (apparently)
For me, theres something meditative about watering my plants. Prosecco in hand of course. It’s a little pause in the chaos of life. A moment to check in with something quiet and green and growing. A gentle reminder that everything needs nourishment - just not too much. And something that forces me to slow down.
So yes, plants are a responsibility. But they’re a beautiful one. A quiet, leafy reminder that growth takes time and care – and that with just a little attention, life can thrive in even the smallest of pots.
Next time you reach for the watering can, do it with love and mindfulness. Pause and take it all in. Your plants will thank you - probably with a new leaf or a flower and a sense of quiet pride.
And my song of the month if you can be bothered: Maroon 5. Lost
