January - Sorry I’m late - I didn’t want to come.

Me: “This is the year I’ll finally become a morning person!” Fast forward to January 4th - Still Me: Hitting the snooze button like my life depends on it. Instead of aiming for perfection, this year I think I’m going to try resolutions that are a bit more… grounded. Literally. After all, each of us are just trying to bloom where we’re planted - even if it’s in the middle of winter or the wrong place entirely. If we’re lucky enough to find ourselves in the right soil - we thrive!
So, as the clock struck midnight this year, I amazed myself, firstly by being awake and secondly by realising that for the second year running, I didn’t have to try & fail at the same old resolution of facing giving up what was by far my worst habit, smoking - because - I don’t smoke.
That particular avenue of pleasure as I call it (nod to Basil Fawltey) has been closed down, & much as I miss my old friend, the one that was with me through thick & thin, happiness, sadness, pain & joy for 30 years. I value my life more.
Someone I know calls smoking ‘slow suicide’ & I’ve always laughed that off. However I’m also now certain there is an element of possible ‘sudden death’ in the mix too. After I had survived a stroke, I never touched another cigarette from that day on. Don’t smoke kids! It’s not as cool as you think. If I could go back & tell my 13 year old self that - I would! (I wouldn’t listen - obviously!)
The photo you see above was taken on Burnham-on-Sea beach a few days ago. I saw the man & his camera, tripod set up, cutting a lonesome figure on the breakwater steps against a purple sky. He waved as I wandered past, he was happy doing what he loves. And that’s what we should all be doing! Do more of what makes you happy.
Anyway. Serious stuff done. Now we can have a laugh & enjoy the fresh new year right? Happy New Year everyone. May 2024 see you happy & healthy & doing more of what you love.
