July; Fate & Fortune

Last week, whilst gardening, I found a lucky horse shoe. And then - shortly afterwards I found a lucky rabbits foot! My initial thoughts after “yay! - loads of good luck for meee” was “hmmm not very lucky for the poor Bunny who now only has 3 feet - & I’m a bit worried about the 3 shoed horse too to be honest”

Carrying a rabbit’s foot is supposed to bring good fortune, though if you ask the rabbit, it’s probably less than thrilled. Folklore tells us the foot must come from the left hind leg of a rabbit caught in a cemetery under a full moon by a red-haired man with a limp (very specific) Somehow, we decided this scenario brings good vibes. I have no idea how I will check which leg my recently received foot came off 🤷‍♀️ Answers on a postcard...

But it started me thinking: What is luck?

Luck — that elusive force we whisper about before job interviews & buying lottery tickets. Some people believe in it wholeheartedly, others say, “We make our own luck!” And then there are those of us who pick up a manky rabbits foot, avoid cracks in pavements, and panic if we spill salt, see a Magpie or break a mirror.

And then there’s 13

The number 13 has long had a bad reputation. Ancient folklore suggests it’s unlucky because 12 is the number of divine order (12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 disciples…), and 13? Well, it’s like the awkward gatecrasher. Hotels skip the 13th floor. Planes sometimes skip row 13 entirely. And if your birthday falls on a Friday the 13th, people look at you like you’ve been hexed since birth.

But here’s the twist: in some cultures, 13 is lucky. Apparently, Italians actually consider 17 to be the dodgy number. Which makes me wonder if luck is just basically peer pressure.

I personally like 13. There is an important date in my past which is 13.7.13 A date which was chosen for several reasons, one of them being nobody else would chose it... because IT’S UNLUCKY!! 😂 However, the 7 was sandwiched in-between as a ‘just in case’ because… well, ‘Lucky 7’ 🤷‍♀️

Now, here’s where it gets spiritual. Some say the universe sprinkles luck like glitter, just waiting for us to walk through it. Others believe luck is about energy - what you put out, you get back. In that case, maybe luck isn’t random at all. Maybe it’s about alignment. Maybe that “lucky break” was the result of being in tune with your purpose, or simply trusting your path. Or maybe that 11:11 I saw on the clock beforehand was the Angels getting things nicely in line…. What if luck is simply a way we connect to something bigger than ourselves? Or do we make our own? You decide. Think about it whilst watering the garden.

So - if you do spill salt today, throw a pinch over your shoulder. And don’t forget to salute Mr Magpie - just in case the universe is watching.

"Sometimes the luckiest people of all are the ones who just believe they are ❤️"

And my song of the month:
